Hybrid Pilates Chair Classes are poised to replace ‘spinning’ as the group exercise of choice at health clubs as the world wide Mind Body Fitness revolution explodes internationally. From NY City Pilates to London Pilates, Rome Pilates, Tokyo Pilates and beyond this 80 year year old Mind body workout is trending upward around the world. A new look at the application of an old exercise is revolutionizing the way fitness is now being taught.

Over the past few years, the large Pilates equipment manufacturers in the world like Peak Pilates, Balanced Body, Stott Pilates, Guthy-Renker group and recently Mad Dogg Fitness that operates in 80 countries have introduced lighter, streamlined versions of the Pilates chair. These new chairs, with sporty names like the MVe, EXO and Malibu Pilates chair, are aimed at taking the chair out of the “special equipment at the Pilates studio” category and into mainstream use. The are marketed to studios and gyms for group classes, and as easy to move and store pieces of home and commercial grade exercise equipment.

Unlike spinning there are a myriad of exercises that can be performed on the Pilates chair considered to be the most challenging piece of Pilates equipment in terms of building strength in the legs and shoulders.

Professional Pilates trainers can spin Pilates movements into a full body cardio workout that can target the upper middle and lower body producing a full body workout that gets you in shape from the inside out. Pilates Chair workouts can also be easily combined with bands or mat work. Members can do abdominals on the mat, stand up and work on the Chair, then incorporate cardio Pilates with Pilates mat exercises. This functional approach to core exercise puts this piece of versatile equipment and the Pilates Method at the cutting edge of the world wide mind body fitness revolution.

Compact and easy to move, the Stability Chair is perfect for studios or gyms with limited space. Joseph Pilates original Pilates chair design had one spring loaded pedal, but STOTT PILATES has modified the chair to include two pedals that can be used independently or locked together and used as one pedal. This modification allows for more pilates exercises and expanded potential of the Pilates machine. This Pilates fitness machine uses spring resistance rather than weights that many other traditional workout machines have. The springs provide gradual resistance as the muscles contract and places less stress on the tendons and ligaments.

Let us learn more about Pilates and also the benefits of using it. Joseph Pilates, a German gymnast and trainer who settled in America, designed the Pilates Wunda chair about a century ago. This equipment was developed specifically for exercises that tone up certain muscles and improve the mind-body connection. The Wunda chair exercises can be done by both young and old people. Even pregnant women and those having problems of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and sinusitis can do appropriate exercise on this special chair.

The Wunda chair has undergone changes recently so that more exercises can be performed in a scientific and effective manner.

Special Features of the Wunda Chair
Let us now look into the special features of the Wunda chair that make it so different from any other exercise equipment. This unique chair is usually made from hard wood, more specifically oak. It has an elongated seat, strong foam padding, pedals, springs, steel frames and elastic cords. The headrest and appended straps are flexible. There are wheels for moving this chair easily. Movements on this chair can be done in different postures — seated, prone, supine, side-seated, standing facing the front, facing the back, facing sideways, and standing on the top as well as on the pedals. The normal specifications of the Wunda chair are: length around 40 inches, height around 25 inches, width around 75 inches, weight around 65 ponds and loading capacity around 300 pounds.

The Wunda Chair facilitates the stretching and strengthening of muscle groups that are not easily reached by traditional equipment. The chair mainly functions on spring tension. There are two springs, each having three settings — low, middle and high. The spring tension or resistance is more at the higher setting and less at the lower setting. The springs are attached to a center pole. They slide up and down for a particular setting and for specific exercises.

To accomplish various spring tensions, we have to increase the angle of pedal. The lowest setting of one is the lightest or equivalent to one spring. In setting 2, the springs are not detached but the spring collar is moved along the pole. The spring tension on the chair, therefore, changes. If you set the resistance to number three for one leg footwork and find it difficult, slide the springs to number 2. This activity can be done easily as the Wunda chair is designed so.

Head-to-Toe Exercises

Over 80 head-to-toe exercises can be performed on the Wunda chair.
